Beowulf is a grip-assistive exoskeletal glove which can be used to increase grip power and to rehabilitate those who have lost it. The glove works by measuring muscle activity in the forearm to tell when a user is trying to grip, and then assisting in the movement using a powerful linear actuator. Force sensors in the fingertips ensures that an appropriate amount of strength is added. Beowulf's primary goal is to restore the grip of stroke victims. In the immediate term, it will supply them with the grip strength they need in their daily lives, and it will also help them to retrain their body to be able to execute the grip independently. Built by students in the BioMechatronics Club at the University of Waterloo, Beowulf is still in the prototyping phase. We aim to create a viable product that can be put to trial to aid stroke victims at our local hospital.
